Journal of Correctional Health Care Announces Leadership Transition

The Journal of Correctional Health Care (JCHC), NCCHC’s official peer-reviewed journal, extends its gratitude to AJ Harzke, DrPH, MPH, outgoing Editor-in-Chief, and Jaime Shimkus, outgoing Managing Editor, for their outstanding leadership and service. Their dedication to the journal, the correctional health care community, and the growth of the field has been instrumental in solidifying JCHC as the premier platform for advancing research, practices, and education in correctional health.

As we bid farewell to Dr. Harzke and Jaime Shimkus, we are excited to welcome Alysse Wurcel, MD, as the new Editor-in-Chief and Michelle Liggitt as the Managing Editor.

Dr. Wurcel brings a wealth of experience, both clinical and research-based, that will guide the journal into its next chapter. Following completion of medical school at University of Pennsylavnia, Dr. Wurcel completed an Internal Medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston followed by Infectious Diseases fellowships at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Tufts Medical Center. She also obtained a master’s in Clinical and Translational Science from Tufts University. Dr. Wurcel was an Infectious Diseases doctor and Associate Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine for the for the past 12 years before moving to Boston Medical Center in October 2024. Dr. Wurcel is a national expert in infectious disease care in correctional settings. She has published over 100 articles, with the majority focusing on HIV, hepatitis C, and COVID-19 in criminal-legal involved populations.

Michelle Liggitt joins us with a robust background as a specialist in proofreading, editing, and formatting business documents, with an emphasis on health care and corrections. Her expertise will ensure a seamless transition and continued excellence in publication standards.
