Transgender Youth: Health Needs and Care Management

This free, 1-hour webinar will explore the concepts of gender identity, sexual orientation, gender presentation and sexual behavior, examining each concept individually and describing how they combine to define a person's overall sexual identity. Dr. John Steever will emphasize increasing one's "cultural competency" with regard to the health care and mental health needs of gender nonconforming youth. He also will provide a short introduction to the medication and management of gender transitioning.

Educational Objectives
• Review the various components that define human sexuality
• Describe the diversity of gender nonconforming youth
• Summarize the basics of medical management for gender transitioning

Continuing Education Credit
1.0 hour of credit is available for physicians, nurses, psychologists and CCHPs.

About the Presenter
John Steever, MD, specializes in pediatrics and adolescent medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, where he is an assistant professor of pediatrics. He also is the primary medical provider of the Transgender Health Project at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center. Dr. Steever graduated from George Washington University Medical School and completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. His training focused on providing medical services to high-risk youth, and his current clinical interests include working with youths infected with HIV. Throughout his career he has worked with a diverse patient population, including youth in detention.
