New directions and opportunities: Correctional health care providers face stress, extraordinary situations, limited resources and concerns well out of the norm for most health care professionals. The conference brings peers together to address specific challenges, make new contacts and leave with more preparation and confidence for whatever’s down the road. NCCHC has been a pioneer in establishing correctional health care standards and helping thousands of correctional systems provide quality health services cost-effectively. Jonathan Mermin, MD, MPH, director of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, CDC, will speak at the opening session on April 7.

* Members of the Academy of Correctional Health Professionals receive a discount of $75 on the early, regular and on-site rates. To join the Academy of Correctional Health Professionals, simply sign up when you register. This group is independent of NCCHC and the discount is offered as a courtesy.

Conference registration includes access to all conference events and educational sessions from Sunday evening through Tuesday, including roundtable discussions, any provided breakfasts or lunches and all exhibit hall events. One-day registration provides access to all events and sessions scheduled for that day. 

Cancellation Policy

Notification of cancellation must be made in writing. Cancellations received by March 21 will be refunded less a $100 processing fee. No refunds will be made for cancellations after March 21. Delegate substitutions are allowed at any time, but NCCHC must be notified in writing. Registrants who fail to attend the conference and do not notify NCCHC are responsible for full payment.

These seminars will discuss the new 2014 Standards, which are NCCHC’s recommendations for managing medical and mental health care delivery in adult correctional facilities and the foundation of its accreditation program. Groundbreaking changes in these editions have the potential to reduce the costs of operations as well as accreditation, while at the same time providing a framework for improved patient care and outcomes. Whether or not your facility is accredited (or plans to be), these practical seminars will give an overview of the changes and guidance in how to achieve and demonstrate compliance. You will leave equipped to implement quality improvements that will lead to more efficient and effective delivery of services, better patient health care, fewer adverse events and reduced liability risk. The instructors will cover changes between the 2008 and 2014 Standards, helping attendees prepare for the CCHP exam on April 6. The registration fee includes a copy of the relevant Standards (jail or prison) — an $80 value.

P-03 Prison Rape Elimination Act: Required Training for Health Staff

The U.S. Justice Department requires jails, prisons and juvenile confinement facilities to provide specialized training to medical and mental health personnel on specific areas of the law surrounding the Prison Rape Elimination Act. Attend this seminar to receive training on how to detect and assess signs of sexual abuse, preserve physical evidence and respond effectively and professionally to victims, all tailored for the health professional. This course will follow the curriculum developed by NCCHC and the National PREA Resource Center.

P-04 The Affordable Care Act and How It Will Affect Correctional Health Care
Therese Brumfield, MBA, CCHP, Corizon

Major provisions of the Affordable Care Act take effect in 2014. Millions of individuals in jails who have not yet been adjudicated will be eligible for coverage. This seminar will discuss how the ACA will affect health care in corrections, with a focus on what correctional health care professionals must consider to meet the law’s requirements and take advantage of the opportunities presented by health care reform. Setting up systems and coordination with state Medicaid agencies and other organizations will be critical. With new coverage opportunities, correctional facilities may see significant savings on health care.

P-05 Reducing Your Risk: Legal Requirements Translated into Practice

This highly interactive presentation combines the correctional risk management experience of a lawyer and physician who have spent their careers practicing in this unique field. While each correctional system is unique, this presentation provides
practical guidelines for reducing risk through comprehensive written protocols, continual training, strong CQI and peer review programs, clear communication of potential claims and early assessment of dangerous suits. Learn how to reduce risk without overburdening the staff.

P-06 Successful Assessment and Management of Suicidal and Self-Injurious Behaviors
Dean Aufderheide, PhD, Florida Department of Corrections

Suicide and serious self-injuries are sentinel events in jails and prisons and effective management of these behaviors is essential. Decisions must be clinically justifiable, precautions implemented quickly and documentation legally defensible. This seminar will focus on the “what works” principles of risk management in ensuring that safety and treatment services match the level of the assessed needs of inmates at risk for these behaviors. It will discuss best practices for identifying imminent warning signs and risk factors and how to differentiate self-injurious from suicidal behaviors. Participants will identify key policy issues in implementing a prevention program and learn the salient skills necessary to effectively assess and treat self-injurious behaviors. An innovative program to create self-injury profiles will be introduced and participants will engage in case studies and learn how to reduce suicide rates and incidents of deliberate self-harm.

FREE! Opening Session – Addressing HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STDs and TB in Correctional Settings

Hear firsthand about correctional health care and the latest on HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases and tuberculosis from the director of this key CDC $1 billion budget national center. Dr. Mermin has served in a variety of capacities in the United States and Africa on infectious disease, including HIV, malaria, TB and emerging infections. There is no charge to attend this session but if you wish to claim continuing education credit, you must have a day or full conference registration.

DeKalb County Jail TOUR
Sunday, April 6, 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm

Transportation will be provided. Learn about health care services in this NCCHC-accredited facility. There is no charge for this tour but registration is required.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office (DKSO), under the leadership of Sheriff Jeffrey L. Mann, conducts numerous rehabilitation, educational and treatment programs as well as programs for weekenders and work release inmates. The facility houses up to 3,636 male and female inmates per month. The health services unit serves as the liaison that oversees the contractual specifications and audits for the jail's four health care vendors: medical, mental health, dental and pharmacy.

Services cover a 24-hour medical/mental health infirmary and a housing unit for chronic care inmates. From the initial screening, DKSO provides preventive care, medical maintenance, emergency care, in-house dialysis, basic dental care, an on-site pharmacy and X-ray and ultrasound capabilities.

The tour will visit the intake area, two housing units, the main clinic area and the medical and mental health infirmaries. It will last approximately one hour and can accommodate up to 20 visitors.

SCP Educational Conference
Sunday, April 6, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

The Society of Correctional Physicians' all-day conference, Violence and Injury: Trauma and the Correctional Patient, will provide up-to-date knowledge about key issues facing physicians working in prisons, jails and juvenile facilities. It will address medical and mental health aspects of PREA, guns and gunshot wounds, sports injury, sex trafficking, a hands-on session on splinting and more. Separate registration is required at www.societyofcorrectionalphysicians.org.


Participation in NCCHC’s Certified Correctional Health Professional program is an investment in your future that will give you a professional edge. Certification recognizes the mastery of national standards and the knowledge expected of leaders in this complex, specialized field. The CCHP credential is a symbol of achievement and leadership, and is highly valued not only by participants but also by employers. The CCHP test is NOT included in conference registration.

New! Specialty Certification for Correctional Mental Health Professionals

More than ever, correctional institutions require trained mental health professionals who can meet the challenges of serving a growing population of inmates with mental health needs. The CCHP-MH specialty certification will support a standardized level of training in the field, help mental health professionals build a foundation of expertise and help facilities evaluate the expertise of their staff.

  • List major health care issues that commonly affect incarcerated individuals, including diabetes, hepatitis, HIV, hypertension, mental illness, oral health and substance abuse

  • Describe current legal, ethical and administrative issues and ways to prevent potential problems that arise in correctional settings

  • Employ new practices for the treatment of major health care issues in order to better manage common medical, nursing, dental and mental health problems found in correctional settings

  • Express increased understanding of common correctional health care issues by exchanging ideas with colleagues about new developments in specialty areas

This meeting will offer up to 27 hours of continuing education credit, which includes preconference seminars. 

CCHPs: Certified Correctional Health Professionals may earn up to 27 contact hours of Category I continuing education for recertification.

Nurses: The National Commission on Correctional Health Care is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. NCCHC designates this educational activity for a maximum of 27 contact hours.

Physicians: The National Commission on Correctional Health Care is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. NCCHC designates this live activity for a maximum of 27 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Psychologists: The National Commission on Correctional Health Care is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. NCCHC maintains responsibility for this program and its content. This educational activity has been approved for up to 26 hours of credit.

Social Workers: NCCHC is seeking approval for this program by the National Association of Social Workers for 27 social work continuing education contact hours.

Your presentation for the National Commission on Correctional Health Care is one of the most important means of exchanging information among correctional health care professionals. These guidelines will help make your presentation as effective as possible.


The time allotment for most sessions is one hour. Please do not go over your allotted time because it will disrupt the program schedule. Plan your talk to allow 10 minutes for questions. (Adjust accordingly if your session is more than one hour.) If you have special needs for your presentation that have not already been accounted for, contact Deborah Ross, Director of Meetings, in advance - at deborahross@ncchc.org.

Plan to speak slowly and clearly so that everyone can understand you, especially if you discuss a topic not covered in your visual presentation materials. As a rough guideline, you should allow for approximately 2-3 minutes per slide that you use for your talk. Therefore, we recommend that you plan for approximately 12-20 slides, maximum, for a 50-minute talk. An introductory slide should show the title of your presentation, your name with credentials and your affiliation.

Because the session rooms can be much larger than typical conference rooms, use large, well-spaced type on your slides and allow space for the border around the image. The maximum number of lines on your slide should be 8-10 lines of type that is preferably 24 pt size or larger for most text and never smaller than 18 pt for any text. Please use the provided template for the conference. 

The organizations that allow NCCHC to offer continuing education require that NCCHC keep copies of presentation materials. In addition, conference attendees are entitled to receive presentation materials for every session, so you MUST provide an electronic copy of your slides for publication. This must be sent to NCCHC by the requested deadline. Otherwise, it is your responsibility to provide presentation handouts, typically 100 copies per session. A copy of the handout also should be provided to NCCHC.


Arrive at your session room 10 minutes before the talk begins to discuss any special arrangements or problems with the session moderator. Please check the audiovisual equipment you will be using. If you plan to use an LCD projector you must bring your own laptop.

Before your talk, the moderator will introduce you, giving, at minimum, your name, professional affiliation and presentation title. If you would like additional information to be shared with the audience, please communicate that to your moderator.

Always speak into your microphone, and when someone asks a question, please repeat it succinctly. Please refrain from making comments that could be perceived by others to be disparaging to the profession of correctional health care or the patients we serve.

Remember, you typically will have a maximum of 50 minutes for your entire presentation plus 10 minutes for questions and answers. Your moderator will signal you when you have approximately 10 minutes remaining. Your moderator may interrupt you, if necessary, to allow adequate time for questions from the audience.

Tips for Increasing Visibility for Your Presentation
  • Update your email signature to include a message such as “Spring Conference on Correctional Health Care takes place April 5-8 in Atlanta www.ncchc.org/spring-conference.”
  • Provide information about the event and your presentation in your organization’s newsletters as well as other communications.
  • Place the show banner or logo on your organization’s website and/or as part of your e-mail signature. It’s available on the show site under “exhibitor information.”
  • Include the Spring Conference in your company calendar on your website.
  • Add information about the conference to your company intranet calendar.
  • Use social media such as Facebook and LinkedIn to publicize your plans to exhibit.
  • Develop and distribute a company press release.
  • Invite your customers and prospects to visit you at the show. There’s plenty of time to register.  Group discounts are also available.
  • A PDF of the conference preliminary program is available for distribution to your customers and suppliers.
