Home Revised Position Statements Support Youth in Custody
The NCCHC Governance Board recently approved three revised and updated position statements that serve to protect youth in custody. These position statements, presented by the Juvenile Health Committee, are among several NCCHC position statements specific to detained youths.
Adolescent Sleep Hygiene recommends a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, trauma-informed approach to the assessment and management of sleep difficulties and sleep disorders for youth detention and confinement facilities, where sleep complaints are extremely common.
Health Care Funding for Youth in Custody (formerly Health Care Funding for Incarcerated Youth) advocates that all youth in public and private detention and confinement facilities remain eligible for all public (e.g., Medicaid) and private health care coverage, consistent with federal, state, and local eligibility requirements.
Suicide Prevention and Management of Youth in Custody (formerly Suicide Prevention and Management in Juvenile Correctional Settings) recommends that all juvenile correctional facilities develop and implement a comprehensive suicide prevention program that takes into consideration the unique characteristics of self-harm and suicide behaviors in youths.
