Educational Objectives

  • List major health care issues that commonly affect incarcerated individuals, including HIV, hepatitis, hypertension, diabetes, mental illness and substance abuse

  • Describe current public health, legal, ethical and administrative issues and ways to prevent potential problems that arise in correctional settings

  • Employ new practices for the treatment of major health care issues in order to better manage common medical and nursing problems found in correctional settings

  • Express increased understanding of common correctional health care issues by exchanging ideas with colleagues about new developments in specialty areas

Continuing Education Credits Available

The maximum CE hours indicated below include participation in preconference seminars.

CCHPs: Certified Correctional Health Professionals may earn up to 26.5 contact hours of Category I continuing education for recertification.

Nurses: The National Commission on Correctional Health Care is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Illinois Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. NCCHC designates this educational activity for 26.5 contact hours (INA-CE Approval Number 0211-4026-1001).

Physicians: The National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. NCCHC designates this educational activity for a maximum of 26.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Psychologists: The National Commission on Correctional Health Care is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. The National Commission on Correctional Health Care maintains responsibility for the program. This educational activity has been approved for up to 26.5 hours of credit.

     Note: According to the American Psychological Association, continuing education credit for psychologists should be offered only for sessions pertinent to their discipline. To see which sessions the NCCHC education committee has identified as appropriate for CE credit for psychologists, consult the Final Program or download this list.

Social Workers: This program is approved by the National Association of Social Workers (Provider # 886452976) for 26.5 continuing education contact hours.

Can't Make It to the Conference? Earn CE Through JCHC!

Physicians, nurses, psychologists and CCHPs may earn continuing education credits through a self-study exam in each issue of the Journal of Correctional Health Care.

JCHC is the only national, peer-reviewed journal with an exclusive focus on correctional health care. Published quarterly under the direction of editor John R. Miles, MPA, it features original research, case studies, best practices, literature reviews and more to keep correctional and public health professionals informed of important trends and  developments. Topics include clinical care, health services and support, personnel and staffing, medical records, quality improvement, risk management, ethics and medical-legal issues. NCCHC's position statements also are published in JCHC.
