An In-Depth Look at NCCHC’s Standards for Health Services ($185)
Choose one: Jails
or Prisons
Jails: Todd Wilcox, MD, MBA, CCHP-A, and Mark Ellsworth, BSN, CCHP
Prisons: B. Jaye Anno, PhD, CCHP-A, and Mark Stern, MD, CCHP
These seminars will discuss the 2008 Standards, which are NCCHC’s recommendations for managing medical and mental health care delivery in adult correctional facilities and the foundation of its accreditation program. Groundbreaking changes in these editions have the potential to reduce the costs of operations as well as accreditation, while at the same time providing a framework for improved patient care and outcomes. Whether or not your facility is accredited (or plans to be), these practical seminars will give an overview of the changes and guidance in how to achieve and demonstrate compliance. You will leave equipped to implement quality improvements that will lead to more efficient and effective delivery of services, better patient health care, fewer adverse events and reduced liability risk. The registration fee includes a copy of the Standards for the setting (jail or prison)—a $70 value.

An In-Depth Look at NCCHC’s New Standards for Health Services in Juvenile Facilities ($185)
Joseph Penn, MD, RN, CCHP, and Ohiana Torrealday, PhD, CCHP
This seminar is your chance to preview the exciting changes in the 2011 edition of the Standards for Health Services, NCCHC’s recommendations for managing the delivery of medical, dental and mental health care in juvenile detention and confinement facilities. Two years in the making, these groundbreaking changes have the potential to reduce costs of operations as well as accreditation, while at the same time providing a framework for improved patient care and outcomes. The daylong session will give an overview to the changes and guide facility staff in how to demonstrate compliance. It will be appropriate both for currently accredited facilities as well as those that have not yet begun the NCCHC accreditation process. The registration fee includes a copy of the 2011 Juvenile Standards addressed in the seminar; the book will be sent upon publication

An In-Depth Look at NCCHC’s Standards for Mental Health Services in Correctional Facilities ($185)
Judith Cox, MA, CCHP, and Steven Helfand, PsyD, CCHP
This groundbreaking work provides a framework for improved mental health care delivery and outcomes in adult correctional facilities. The foundation of NCCHC’s mental health accreditation program, these standards parallel those for health services in format and substance. The difference is that they make more explicit what the standards require for adequate delivery of mental health services. Whether or not your facility plans to be accredited, this practical seminar will explain what the standards say with regard to the general areas of care and treatment, clinical records, administration, personnel and legal issues. You will leave equipped to implement quality improvements that will lead to more efficient and effective delivery of services, better patient care, fewer adverse events and reduced liability risk. The registration fee includes a copy of the Mental Health Standards—a $70 value.

Practical Preparation for Initial NCCHC Accreditation ($99)
Catherine Knox, RN, CCHP-RN, and Janice Hill, RN, CCHP-RN, CCHP-A
This seminar addresses the practicalities of NCCHC accreditation; it is not a standards review. Focus includes the four phases of the accreditation process: preparing your facility; what to expect during the survey, with tips on how to make the visit as painless as possible; Accreditation Committee review of findings and follow-up corrective action; and how to unwind afterward. Benefit from the experiences of those who have been through the process many times and have your questions answered. This seminar is intended for those unfamiliar with the process or those applying for accreditation for the first time.

Assessment and Treatment of Suicide Risk and Self-Injurious Behaviors ($99)
Dean Aufderheide, PhD
Suicide and serious self-injuries are sentinel events in jails and prisons. The effective management of these behaviors, therefore, is among the most important challenges facing correctional professionals. Decisions must be clinically justifiable, precautions implemented quickly and documentation must be legally defensible. This seminar will focus on the "what works" principles of risk management in ensuring that safety and treatment services match the level of the assessed needs of inmates at risk for suicide and serious self-injurious behaviors. We will learn about the best practices for identifying imminent warning signs and risk factors and how to differentiate self-injurious from suicidal behaviors. While identifying key policy issues in implementing a suicide and self-injury prevention program, participants will learn the salient skills necessary for the effective assessment and treatment of self-injurious behaviors.

Infectious Disease Update: New and Emerging Issues (FREE)
TBD
Detection and treatment of infectious diseases is especially important in correctional settings, where inmates possess risk factors related to high-risk behavior, lack of prior health care and conditions of incarceration. Recommended practices for disease management change rapidly, presenting challenges for clinicians. In addition to common concerns such as HIV, sexually transmitted infections, hepatitis and tuberculosis, clinicians also must be aware of new and emerging threats, such as evolving antibiotic-resistant pathogens, deadly strains of influenza, foodborne diseases and emerging infections. This session will review “what’s new” regarding diseases of special concern in correctional settings, highlighting recommendations for surveillance, detection and treatment. This seminar is free, but advance registration is required.

Advanced Nursing Assessment for Triage and Health Assessments ($99)
Todd Wilcox, MD, MBA, CCHP-A
This seminar is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of nurses who perform health assessments. The intended learning outcome is deeper understanding of the physical assessment. This session will discuss appropriate techniques for physical examination of the head, ears, eyes, nose, throat, chest and abdomen. It will contrast and compare normal and abnormal clinical presentation, and will review appropriate documentation for the physical assessment.

Pain Management: A Multidisciplinary Approach ($99)
Rebecca Lubelczyk, MD, CCHP
Although research has improved understanding of pain mechanisms, the availability of newer drug therapies and procedures has added to the complexity of pain management. The inmate complaining of pain presents unique challenges related to the determination of medical necessity and drug-seeking due to addictions and secondary gain. To help participants understand pain management in the correctional setting, this seminar will take a multidisciplinary approach: defining the primary types of pain, reviewing the anatomy and physiology of pain, describing general principles and pharmacological treatment options, and considering the emotional behavioral and social aspects of pain.
