Spring Conference on Correctional Health Care - Call for Proposals
Share your knowledge and advance the field. NCCHC is seeking presenters to share information, research, innovative solutions and best practices in every aspect of correctional health care at the 2017 Spring Conference on Correctional Health Care.
Nearly a thousand health professionals attend the Spring Conference, one of the largest in the world for this field. They come to be educated and inspired by leaders from every discipline in this diverse sector of health care. Be one of those leaders. Teach your colleagues how to elevate their standards of professionalism, improve health care delivery and be more efficient and productive.
Correctional health care providers face extraordinary situations, limited resources, stress and concerns well out of the norm for most health care professionals. The conference brings peers together to address common challenges, make new contacts and leave with more preparation and confidence for whatever’s ahead.
Speaker benefits include a discounted rate to attend the conference ($200), recognition in promotional materials, professional development and the chance to earn credit for CCHP recertification.
PROPOSAL SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Proposals must be submitted online. We suggest that you prepare the information in advance to save time online and to ensure that you have a backup copy. Please copy the information into a plain text editor, such as MS Notepad, to eliminate formatting before you copy it to the submission form. Note: There is a maximum of three proposals per person.
All proposals must have a designated lead presenter who is the sole point of contact. The lead presenter is responsible for submitting the proposal, informing copresenters of the selection decision, distributing materials to copresenters, planning the presentation agenda and ensuring that the content is not biased. All items below are required to complete your submission. The maximum number of presenters is three.
- Contact information and professional affiliation
- 1-page CV or resume
- Disclosure form: All presenters are required to disclose any relevant financial relationships with commercial interests, as explained on the disclosure form.
- Qualifications to present the material (lead only)
- Title: Clearly and concisely indicate the subject and focus of the presentation (maximum 100 characters).
- Presentation Summary: Succinctly describe the presentation for the Final Program (maximum 450 characters). Use complete sentences (not bullets) and avoid writing in first-person narrative.
- Abstract: Summarize the purpose, methods, findings and conclusions of your presentation and explain what attendees may expect to gain from it (maximum 1500 characters).
- Learning Objectives: Provide three learning objectives for the presentation and a brief explanation on how each objective will be met. (Tips for Writing Learning Objectives)
- Content Outline: Outline the content of your presentation in three parts correlating to the learning objectives. (Tips for Writing Content Outlines)
- Skill Level: Indicate the level of your presentation—basic, intermediate or advanced. Because 40% of attendees have been in this field for more than 10 years, we welcome more advanced-level talks.
- Permission to Record: Sessions may be audiorecorded to enable postconference learning. Please indicate whether permission is granted to record and distribute your presentation.
SELECTION CRITERIA AND REVIEW
The NCCHC education committee will review all submissions. Decisions are based on the following criteria:
- Content must be relevant to health care provided in correctional settings.
- Content must be accurate.
- Content must be based on scientific modalities of diagnosis or therapy (if applicable).
- The presentation must not show preference for one product or service over another unless there is a clear scientific or objective basis to do so, or unless the presentation allows for a fair discussion of alternatives.
- Presentations that promote corporate products or services will not be accepted.
- Corporate support, if any, must be disclosed.
- If applicable, the presentation must be consistent with NCCHC standards and promote their use.
- Presenters’ credentials should be appropriate to present the subject matter.
- The presentation should be sufficiently in-depth to require the full time allotment (usually 1 or 2 hours).
- Presentation goals and objectives should correspond with the conference goals and objectives (see sidebar).
To best meet attendees’ needs, we favor presentations that:
- Engage the audience in productive discussions
- Provide practical knowledge, skills and tools that can be employed on the job
- Advance the quality of care provided to patients
- Improve the work life of those engaged in the delivery of care
- Encourage innovation in devising effective approaches and solutions
The lead presenter will be notified of the selection decision in late November. Presentations will be scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, May1–2. Submission of a proposal implies a commitment to attend the conference should your proposal be accepted. All speakers will receive a discount on the conference registration fee.
Presentation and speaker information will appear in the preliminary and final programs, and abstracts will appear in the proceedings. Each room will be equipped with a podium, microphone, laptop, screen, head table and LCD projector. Additional audiovisual equipment may be rented at the speaker’s expense.

The Spring Conference seeks to meet the educational needs of its multidisciplinary audience. The following topics represent some of the broad topic areas that may be addressed:
- Administration/Management: health care reform, budgets and fiscal management, human resources, orientation and training, technology, operational impact of regulatory compliance, preparing for use of the ICD-10, staffing, workforce development, working with corrections personnel, public health linkages, transitioning inmates out of segregation
- Legal/Ethical: ethics, transgender care, legislative update, risk management, regulatory compliance (e.g., PREA), working with legislators, mock trial
- Medical: clinical updates and guidelines, infectious disease, chronic disease, prevention, special populations (e.g., geriatric, juvenile, veterans), terminal illness, multidisciplinary/integrated care, cost-effective care, malingering, gender dysphoria, pain management
- Mental Health: clinical updates, substance abuse, jail-specific options, treatment, segregation, cognitive impairment, sex offenders, nonsuicidal self-injury, suicide prevention, trauma-informed care, dementia vs. delirium, special populations, women and abuse
- Nursing: advanced skills improvement, competency-based orientation and training, evidence-based practices, nursing processes (e.g., intake, sick call), staffing models, scope of practice
- Oral Health: screening, diagnosis, treatment, periodontal disease, oral cancer, dentures, emergency care, major trauma, clinic management, standards of care, staffing, legal issues
- Pharmaceuticals: medication management, utilization management, cost control, narcotics use, formulary design, reducing polypharmacy, psychotropic utilization
