Job Analysis Will Inform CCHP-RN Exam
Nursing practice is
continually changing, and the challenges of practice in
corrections adds a layer of complexity to an already demanding
field. The CCHP board of trustees is committed to creating a
specialty certification that corresponds to the evolution of
correctional nurses’ work.
A task force made up of 12 experienced nurses from
prisons, jails and juvenile and federal facilities has provided
the leadership for development of the CCHP-RN program. The
latest phase of their work is the CCHP-RN Job Analysis Survey,
now being conducted among RNs who are CCHP certified.

Step Up! Seeking Candidates for Board
Serving on the
Certified Correctional Health Professional board of trustees is
a great way to "give back" to this important program and the
thousands of people who participate in it. But the benefits go
both ways: It is also a wonderful opportunity for leaders in
this field to continue their professional growth and build their
network of like-minded colleagues.
If that piques your interest, step up! CCHPs in good
standing are encouraged to seek nomination, or to nominate a
fellow CCHP, to serve on the board of trustees. The board is
charged with guiding the CCHP program and improving it as
necessary to make it more responsive to the needs of the
correctional health care community. Trustees are also
responsible for developing, scoring and evaluating the various
certification exams.
Upon acceptance of nomination, candidates will be asked
to submit a short statement describing their ideas about the
direction of the CCHP program. Elections will be conducted
online later this summer. The new trustees will begin their term
immediately after the annual board meeting in October.
To make a nomination, complete the
online form by July 31,
2009.

Coming Soon: CCHP Certification
for Nurses
We are pleased to announce a
forthcoming certification program for nurses working in the
correctional setting. As part of the most widely accepted
certification program in the correctional health care field,
CCHP-N certification will recognize the work
correctional nurses do and the difference they make.
By far, nurses are the largest group within the CCHP
program, so when the board of trustees decided last year to
offer specialty certification, it made sense to start with
nurses. They knew it
would make a difference—to the patients whose care is provided
by certified correctional nurses, to employers who must staff
their facilities with skilled and experienced correctional
nurses, and to the individual nurse who attains the CCHP-N
credential.
Applicants must be CCHP certified and meet these eligibility requirements:
• A current, active RN license within a U.S. state or territory
or the professional, legally recognized
equivalent in another country
• The equivalent of 2 years full time of practice as a
registered nurse
• At least 2,000 hours of clinical practice in correctional
nursing within the last 3 years
• 30 hours of continuing education in
correctional nursing within the last 3 years
Check back soon for more details, or see the next issue
of CorrectCare. (Fall 2008)

Celebrates 15 Years: Break Out the Crystal!
This spring, more than 100 correctional health professionals
will participate in the CCHP exam at test sites in Nevada, North
Carolina, Oregon and Wisconsin. These individuals, like those
who took the first exam 15 years ago, hope to distinguish
themselves as professionals who have the knowledge expected of
leaders working in the field of correctional health care.

Celebrating
Longevity
The CCHP program has been
in existence for over 15 years. Many in the group of brave
souls who took the first CCHP exam in the fall of 1989 remain
active in the program today.
To celebrate their
dedication, special 15-year gold tabs that hang on the
CCHP pin were distributed at the 2005 National Conference on
Correctional Health Care. These long-timers also were recognized
during the Tuesday luncheon at the conference.
If you are a 5-, 10- or 15-year CCHP but
missed the meeting, you can purchase a pin enhancer for $10 via
the NCCHC online catalog.
